Summer in Senj

Fortress Nehaj The first sight you need to see when you come to Senj is the age-old Fortress Nehaj. It is the symbol of the town, built in 1558, under the supervision of the Military Border's captain and general Ivan Lenković and captain Herbert VIII Auersperg Turjaški. It was built with the material collected form the ruined churches, monasteries and houses previously outside the city's walls, and it was meant to defend the city from the Turks and Venetians. It is 18 m high and 23 m wide. A collection of the Uskoks of Senj (their costumes, armour and weapons), a permanent photo-exhibition of the churches of Senj through centuries; an exhibition of the citizens and noble’s coats-of-arms from Senj and the Coastal captaincy of Senj are all set in the fortress.
Carnival
Along with the cultural and historical heritage and its natural beuties, Senj is famous after the Senj's summer carnival, the oldest and the biggest summer carnival in Croatia. Carnival lasts for four days, usually in the second week of August. The final event is the big carnival parade with several thousands of masks from Croatia and abroad.
Beaches
As for the beaches, there are all kinds and to suit any need. There is the central beach Škver for families with kids. It is combined with concrete and pebbles, with all the facilities (showers, bars, restaurants, playgrounds, video games, pool, etc.). Other beaches in town (Điga, Banja, Prva Draga) also offer everything required for relaxation and rest.
Night life Senj is filled with fun places for partying in the warm summer nights. The widely acclaimed discoteque Magnus, decorated in the Ancient Roman style, has room for 1200 people. There are also bars Konoba, Banja, Škver with terraces by the sea, Armiž and many other bars all over the town, offering good time. Visit Senj and see for yourself.
